CleanSea was founded by twins Lukas and Mikaela Julher, with the goal of protecting marine wildlife and creating a clean west coast. Lukas and Mikaela grew up on the west coast during summers and love the ocean. But they also noticed the enormous amounts of plastic washing up on the coastline. So they started CleanSea as a student enterprise in 2019, with the goal of removing plastic from the ocean and coastline. They conduct coastal cleanups, clean islands with their boat, and carry out diving operations on the seabed. The project is funded through their CleanSea bracelets (1 bracelet = 1 kg of ocean plastic removed), 1,660 CleanSea members, and partnerships with companies that want to help protect the future of the ocean.
Today, CleanSea is a team of 13 employees working together to protect the ocean. They conduct 5 cleanups per week year-round and have so far collected over 110,000 kg of ocean waste.
Fiskekretsen and CleanSea are entering into a partnership to make concrete efforts for the ocean and the west coast. CleanSea has identified the 100 most vulnerable bays on the west coast, where large amounts of plastic wash ashore. Fiskekretsen has adopted one of these areas, Saltö, which they will now jointly keep clean year-round through continuous cleanups. CleanSea will remove hundreds of kilograms of plastic, ghost fishing gear, and other debris from this area to keep Saltö clean and beautiful, and to protect the local marine wildlife. A life-saving difference for marine animals, and an important step closer to getting the west coast under control.
