About Us

Lost fishing gear is considered to be the marine debris that causes the most damage to wildlife, as it continues to catch fish and shellfish long after being lost. Even above the surface, it causes problems for various species, particularly birds. We have now formed Fiskekretsen to address this environmentally harmful problem. This applies to both commercial and subsistence fishing.

According to the EU, 27% of all litter on our beaches consists of fishing gear. To reduce littering and finance collection and recycling efforts, the EU has implemented requirements (according to regulation 2021:1001) regarding producer responsibility for fishing gear. This means that the industry in each country must take responsibility and form producer responsibility associations, which must be established by the end of 2024/25. Fiskekretsen’s mission is to help your company fulfill its responsibilities and contribute to a better environment.

Fiskekretsen’s main objectives are to:

  • Facilitate the collection and recycling of fishing gear containing plastic
  • Promote the use of recycled plastic in new products
  • Reduce the amount of plastic waste in oceans and other aquatic environments
  • Provide support and information to Fiskekretsen members to ensure compliance with current legislation

The goal is to collect and recycle at least 20 percent of fishing gear containing plastic that is introduced into the Swedish market.

Fiskekretsen will disseminate information and raise awareness among producers, fishermen, and the general public about the importance of proper handling of fishing gear after use.

Fiskekretsen collaborates with the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency and the country’s municipalities to ensure that the collection and recycling system complies with all legal requirements.
